Should I Get An Animation Team For COTW?

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 20, 2012, 2:09 PM
Because I'm almost 100% sure I won't have the time or means to keep animating episodes while I'm in University, which will mean I'll be confined to doing it in the summers, and at that rate the series will take years to finish, (and probably won't get finished at all), but I really want to get this story done or it will bother me and eat at me forever.  So should I put up a video asking for animation "auditions" and then just use a team of animators?

I'd still edit it, write it, and collect/direct voice talent, I would just be using animations created by other people rather than my own.

What do you think of that idea?

PLEASE comment with your opinion/suggestions, I'm trying to decide if I should try it.

I'm going to start asking for emails/setting it up once I'm settled into University. I really don't have time to go through everything right now, I've got to take care of a lot of things.

I'll post an audition as soon as you're settled in your University, but I mainly use Photoshop for my animations, not quite used to pencil but we'll see.

Good luck at Uni :'D

I know your passion is writing the episode, not animating it. So I don't see why not as long as they are as good (Or better) Then you at animating.

I personally think you should. It would keep a bit more stress off of you. But then again, some animators take like, a year to put out one episode if they try to make it so perfect. o3o If they could just do what you do, then I'm all for it. 8D

I think it should be all you, and that you take your time on it. We don't need to rush you :). You are amazing on your own, and got a good roll here. It shouldn't matter how much time, do what you need to do, I and many others will support you.

I think you should do the main animation, because different styled animations would make it look strange.
You could, however, have people do the backgrounds, coloring, and putting together of the videos. I know its hard to do it all by yourself ;w; I'm trying to animate the rise of scourge, and its taking forever ;w;
but you should do it however you feel comfortable, it is after all your series.

I don't think you should, you started your own series, and you should finish it by yourself the same way you started it. Also, like many people mentionned, your style will change by the drawings of your animators,it's really special and unique your style, and it's one that I like the most. Including that all animators animate at a different speed,it may even take a year or more to make it look like your style, and what will happen if most of the animators would just give up for their educations or something else, you'll need to find some more, make them get used to your style, and we don't know how long it takes for someone to animate like you, especially a beginner, it could take longer than you, wich also means that some but not all people, will complain.(even thought you're really, the fastest animator I've known.)

Anyhow,it's your series,you decide,but that's just my opinion.

Your logic is flawed because no matter what, I'm still taking back the torch in the summer. If nothing gets done during the year with the team, then nothing lost nothing gained, yes? Because I probably can't be doing it during the schoolyear anyway. A team is a chance for episodes to come out while school's on, but if that doesn't work out then they'll still come out in the summer.

Mmmm,you're right about that.
But in other simpler words,I'd prefere to wait, because it'll be worth it,and nothing would change.
I'm sorry if I offended you in any ways, for it was not my intentions.

You should do it.
You've got a great following of people who use similar styles to yours. So if you were to have this happen, it wouldn't be too 'shocking' of a change. (:
I'd love to 'audition' to be on the team.
How many people would you be looking for?
And how would you peace it together?
(One person animates this episode, then someone else animates the next. Or everyone's assigned to a scene? ./shrugs) :3

I'd so scene assignments, mostly because I don't think anyone would have the willpower to actually slog through an entire episode on their own without getting supermegalazy by the end @.@ God knows I do.

But my laziness is easier to swallow than a hired gun's laziness, so I'd give people scenes, or half scenes or quarter scenes to work with so that what I get is their best, and not just frustrated scribblings xP

On another note, will that Greystripe AMV you were working on come out before your expedition to college? Or will you save that for later?

That's what I would do. Maybe have a contest to find animators. It might be easier to compare the animations to each other if everyone animated something similar.

If one person does a very simple animation, and someone else puts a very complex one together, it might be hard to compare them, even if they both have good talent. Whereas, if you give them something that you want animated (i.e. "I would like a walk cycle, and a lip-sync example", or something like that) it might be easier to decide which animators you would like to have in your team.

Just a suggestion of course.

When I'm actually going to do is, I've written out a short-ish scene, that they will have the option of either picking an action from, or a lip-synced bit from, or do the entire thing, and I'll give them the audio for it and just say go crazy. That way everyone's using the same characters and the same scene, so I can evaluate it fairly. That's why I put up those references earlier - they're for the scene :3

Thankies for your input!

I might audition, but I'm in the process of starting my own series, and Sophomore year may prove to be busy. But I suppose I could audition anyway. :)

If it would make your life easier and less stressful then yeh you should :) I'd only be put off by this though because they might not animate it in your drawing style and that would be pooey because your style is really amazing and unique to the series... :3

I think have people to colour it and stuff but you basically still animate it, we just go FRAME LET ME COLOUR YOU and then colour it
Add BGs, shading etc...
People who advertise it, check it other before releasing it stuffs like that
Like Disney... but instead we could be called Team Tribble

Perhapos to keep your style flowing within it, do a really basic storyboard which people WILL reff off REALLY closely, but just add animootions :3

I do like this idea, and I bet you my bottom dollaer you'll get zillions of entries :'D also, NEVER HIRE ME!!! COTW WOULD ONLY GET FINISHED BY 2020 :'CCC

I have and Idea. You could sketch everything out, and send certain sections of it to people, like a scene of it. They could color and do backgrounds so all of the backgriunds on that scene look alike and aren't all different.

I hope that makes some sort of sense lol

Mostly I think you are a great animator, and your own style brings a lot into the characters, but if you really have no time, then you're going to have a lot of angry fans x3

Maybe you could try one or two episodes like this and see how it turns out?

It would be risky, look at SSSwarriorcats, they had a pretty solid team but it's fallen apart for them. (their two head animators left- who were both professionals)

See, but they set such a high bar. I'm by no means a professional, and a team trying to reproduce the sad little things I manage to churn out, is nowhere near as daunting as trying to mimic Yuji's work.

It's sort of like a tower- if one of the base animators you rely on quits then the whole thing might fall together. It may not happen - but there are quite a few obstacles in the way if you choose to have an animation team for COTW. Theres still a certain uniqueness about your style that makes it original to you, and will be quite hard for most people to mimic. I wish you good luck, whatever you choose. ;u;

Sounds like a good idea, i'd just hope it didnt look like a MEP or something. Like everyone keeps saying, the styles should be the same and you should make sure those you choose are dedicated ^_^

This would probably work if you did very detailed sketches in your own style, and then had the other animators ink and animate it.

I think this’d be an idea worth trying out. We don’t want the series to go unfinished, and we especially don’t want you to kill yourself animating it when you have more important things like schooling to focus your effort on.
That said, judging by the majority of the comments, how this team will function is a bit of an issue. I suppose I’m the minority in that I wouldn’t particularly mind if the other animators used a style different than yours (as much as I love your art, I watch the series for the story/characters/etc and wouldn’t be particularly bothered if it looked a little different). However, consistency throughout the episode might be a problem. I’m not sure if you’re thinking of having an MEP-style episode with different people animating different sections, or having different people do different jobs. You could try having certain people animate certain characters, but that could prove difficult in blending scenes together (green screen party huzzah). Another option would be to have several people each animate their own designated episode—the style would be consistent throughout each individual episode, and while it might take a while for each person to complete it, if you handed off the scripts and such to everyone at the same time, the series could be completed in roughly the time it takes for you to complete one or two episodes.
If that train of thought makes sense. OTL, why am I still talking at 1:30 in the morning?
Anyway, at the end of the day I have to repeat what someone else recommended: maybe upload a tentative animator audition and stress that you may not choose anyone at all. It’ll let you see what your possible future teammates have to offer as well as give you time to think if you really want to commit to this. Maybe even do a short little video with a few of your chosen ones to experiment with the process. Just remember, university is more important ;)
And sister, if you ever need an animation slave, just look me up. I’m not sure how well I can emulate your style, but I intend on bringing my tablet along for the college ride, and I’ll need something to help me procrastinate during my Chemistry classes xD If you decide that this is what you want, I shall be auditioning.
Now then, time to quit boring you and sleeeppp…

Personally, I'd prefer to see the story in your art style all the way through, but I can sympathise with the no-time thing. So, if you really dont think you can get it done yourself, go for it :)
However, you may have problems with consistancy, you will need to find artists who have vaguely similar art styles, or the whole thing will just be a little dodgy.
Good luck, whatever you choose.
