Mabel's lips were parted in shock and her enormous eyes stared at me accusingly. I noticed her hair was tangled, and she wasn't wearing her usual carefully applied makeup or clothing, instead she simply had on a pale blue nightgown. It looked as if she had just woken up – but how did she get here? Blake's farm was a good hour's ride from the city, why would she have come? All three of us were silent for a moment, all three of our minds calculating the consequences of what had just happened.
"Vivian," Mable repeated, her voice very quiet, "What are you doing?"
I pulled myself away from Blake and cautiously drew closer

My horse's, hooves thudded and clopped along the cobblestones. She snorted as heavy droplets of rain began to fall from the sky. They pitter-pattered on the stone, gentle rhythms in stark contrast with those of Copper's walking. Windows were closed and laundry was removed from lines on balconies above us, the city was retreating into itself for the coming downpour. A thin mist rose from the cobblestones and began to snake its way through the streets. Copper's hooves split it as they trotted though. I smiled at the sky, enjoying the feeling of the rain softly falling to my face, trusting Copper to know the way home, I let go

Ten Years Prior

A tinkling laugh carried over a shallow stream. The water swept it down to women washing their laundry and men rinsing the blood off their forearms after skinning freshly killed deer, farther down the bank where the stream widened into a river. Sunlight dappled the water as it bubbled its way across perfectly rounded brown stones and the odd turtle or frog, lazing in the mud.
"Shhh!" came a light-hearted hiss in response. I let out another sputtering laugh and he slapped his hand over my mouth, "do you want the entire country to know you're here?" he inquired, one eyebrow raised in mock disapproval. I diss

Goosebumps rise upon my forearms as they brush the cool surface of the walls. These walls are damp and rough. They bare the burden of all those who have leaned against them, just as I do now. Those men are gone, but traces remain. Claw marks of the mad ones, cleanly etched writings of the sane. Far to my left there is the mark of an artist.
